9 January At the insistence of the United States Army Air Forces, Boeings Chief Test Pilot, Eddie Allen, made the first flight of the Lockheed L Constellation prototype, NX, from Lockheed Air ankomsthall at Burbank, California, to Muroc Army Airfield (today known as Edwards Air Force Base). Lockheeds ledare Test Pilot, Milo G. Burcham, was the co-pilot.
Also on board were Lockheeds chief research engineer, Clarence L. (Kelly) Johnson; Rudy Thoren, Johnsons assistant; and Dick Stanton, chief mechanic.
When the flygning ended after 58 minutes, Allen said, This machine works so well that you dont need me anymore! With that, Allen returned to Seattle.

27 November Cecilio Imaz Batida of Spain, flying a Lockheed LE Super Constellation, EC-AIO, set a Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Record for Speed Over a Commercial Airline Route from New York City, New York, United States of America, to Madrid, Spain. The average speed over the course was ,90 kilometers per hour ( miles per hour).¹
The Lockheed LE Super Constellation was an improved LC with a strengthened fuselage and wings to accommodate a takeoff weight of up to , pounds (68, kilograms), anticipating retrofitting the airplane to turboprop engines. It was used primarily on long overwater routes. Only 23 of this model were sold before Lockheed changed production to the LG variant.
The LE was powered by four air-cooled, supercharged and fuel-injected 3,cubic-inch-displacement ( liter) Wright Aeronautical Division Cyclone 18 TC18DA1 two-row, cylinder turbo-compound radial engines. The engines high-velocity exhaust gases drove three “blow down” turbines which were geared to the engine’s crankshaft.
